Overview

Noveera Ahmed, Chair of the Division of Life Sciences

Sustainability is the careful stewardship of natural, social, and economic resources so that we meet our present needs without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainable practice and development requires a commitment to environmental justice; i.e., the idea that environmental costs and risks should not be shouldered by any one geographical region or segment of society.

The mission of the Sustainability program is to offer an integrative, interdisciplinary approach that prepares students to address the challenges and ethical responsibilities of sustainable development. Students explore the theory and practice of sustainability in a number of different disciplines, including, but not limited to, environmental science, business, ethics, economics, and sociology. We aim to connect students to our community to support people and organizations (for-profit, nonprofit, and government) to address the pressing environmental issues of our time.

The Division of Life Sciences at St. John Fisher University is committed to academic excellence and creating an environment where everyone, from any background, can do their best work.  We will achieve this by working collaboratively to create student-centered and inclusive learning environments that encourage resilience and reflection.  We believe in the importance of mentorship and our responsibility to serve as guides supporting our students as they discover their own paths.  We will provide agency to develop students who are self-directed learners and leaders, in and out of the classroom.  We will model being global citizens by demonstrating and teaching social, environmental, and professional responsibility.
