Program Requirements
B.A. in Philosophy
A major in philosophy consists of 30 credits chosen from the department offerings. The total requirement is deliberately kept small to encourage the student to combine courses in philosophy with solid concentrations in such other areas as his or her interests and career goals suggest, with dual majors encouraged.
All courses that may apply to the major are included in the determination of the grade point average in the major.

Required courses - 12 credits
- PHIL 123 Introduction to Philosophy (3)
- PHIL 124 Introductory Ethics (3)
- PHIL 496- Must take 3 credits (3)
- One REST or PHIL course must be at the 300 level or above, including 3990 (3)
Electives -18 credits
Choose 18 credits from Philosophy and related areas (see list below):
- Any PHIL courses
- AILI 201 Phil & Culture (3)
- One approved REST course may also be applied to the major (3):
- REST 386D Morality & Business
- REST 387D Medical Ethics & Society
- REST 2220 Death & the Afterlife
- REST 2351 Marriage & Sexuality
- REST 2450 Info Rights & Wrongs
- REST 2460 Ecocentric Ethics
- REST 2477 Transformational Leadership
Total: 30 credits
*Although 100 level courses in philosophy may be used to fulfill this requirement, no courses from the foundational areas of Core 2020 may apply. These areas include Learning Community, Research-Based Writing, and Data Analysis courses. PHIL 3990 may be used as a major elective, or minor elective.
