Overview
An actuary is a trained professional who manages financial risks and uncertainties using mathematical, statistical, and computational methods. They manage risks in a variety of business settings, such as insurance, pensions, investments, and government. Actuaries also play a crucial role in developing and pricing financial products, such as retirement plans or insurance policies.
St. John Fisher’s Actuarial Science major prepares students for this career by giving students a firm foundation in statistical techniques, business acumen, and their mathematical underpinnings. The program is designed to progress students toward being credentialed by either the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society, the two largest professional societies for actuaries in the United States. Progress is often measured by certification exams in this area, and this program directly prepares students for the first two exams: Exams P (Probability) and FM (Financial Mathematics) administered by the Society of Actuaries. Content toward subsequent exams for both the SOA and CAS is addressed in the program content.
