The residency program at St. John Fisher University offers graduate level teacher candidates a yearlong, full time immersive experience in a classroom leading to their initial NYS teaching certificate. When connected with a registered Apprenticeship, candidates are paid during their graduate program. Residents are placed in a co-teaching model with an experienced mentor teacher enabling them to apply their graduate level learning with guidance to their classroom teaching every day.

In this program , teacher candidates are engaged in guided assessment, planning, and teaching as they work with their mentor teacher They develop a deeper understanding of the students as well as the school community through full-time mentoring which leads to a smoother transition into the profession. This immersive experience benefits the candidates, mentor teachers, and P-12 students.
