    This course is designed to provide a foundational understanding of sport management principles for students without an undergraduate degree in sport management or similar degree pertaining to sport business. It should be taken within the first two semesters of enrollment. Students may be waived out of the course requirement by the graduate program director if they possess an undergraduate degree in sport management or a similar degree pertaining to sport business.

  • GSMT-510 Socio-Hist Found of Sport (3)

    This course provides a critical historical analysis of sport as a social structure in the U.S. Key areas of exploration include sport as a cultural product, social relations within sport, sport management structures, and contemporary social issues. The intersectionality of race, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, disability, and ethnicity are explored in the context of sport.

  • GSMT-520 Venue & Event Management (3)

    The basics of planning for, building, and managing facilities used for sport, recreation, and entertainment are covered in this course. Course material will include sources of financing new facility builds and renovations, staffing and budgeting, risk management and other legal implications, as well as sustainable practices of facility management. Paired with this will be instruction on planning, executing, and evaluating sport and recreation events ranging in scope from local, amateur events to global, professional events. Students should anticipate applied assignments.

  • GSMT-530 Sport Economics (3)

    In this course students will learn about economic principles that impact the financial management of professional, college, and Olympic sport. Topics include supply and demand, market share, league structure, and government regulation. Students will examine ownership structure, sources of capital, and economic impact studies.

  • GSMT-540 Strategic Communications (3)

    The content of this course centers on the role communications plays in the strategic management of sport organizations. It includes an examination of how internal and external communications relate to leadership and organizational effectiveness and efficiencies. The course also explores current topics such as the relationship between the media and the sport industry, the role athletes and coaches play in media relations, developments in new media and their implications for sport business.

  • GSMT-550 College Athletics Admin. (3)

    Students will learn about the many facets of managing intercollegiate athletic organizations and properties including governance, revenue generation, facilities management, events and operations, development, and human resource management. Course material includes an examination of the principles and processes of the NCAA and its affiliate conferences, starting with a historical perspective and proceeding to current issues in intercollegiate athletics.

  • GSMT-560 Human Resource Mgmt (3)

    This course provides an introduction to human resource management in sport organizations. Managerial functions such as communications, staffing, evaluation, training and development, compensation, and motivation will be addressed. While there are no prerequisites for this course, some material will reinforce and extend knowledge gained in Strategic Management in the Sport Industry and Risk Management.

  • GSMT-570 Data Analytics in Sport (3)

    Analytics includes the inclusive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive models, and fact-based decision making. Analytic methods are employed to gain insights on team and player production, human resource practices, and game management. Additionally, quantitative methods are used to analyze pricing, advertising, promotions, and other sport business decisions. The course will discuss the theory, development, and application of analytics in sport. Students will learn about the application of analytics in sport for purposes of evaluating player performance, team management, market segmentation, pricing, and other areas in sport industry operations.

  • GSMT-580 Entrepreneurship (3)

    In this course students will engage in a process of discovering new ways of combining resources to provide consumers with a new or reimagined product or service. Students will identify the unsatisfied wants and needs of sport consumers and learn how to envision new approaches to addressing them. Course content will also include instruction on identifying potential investors, raising capital, and transitioning from idea development to strategy execution to bring a product or service into the market.

  • GSMT-610 Sport Marketing (3)

    Students will gain an overview of the core sport marketing and promotions concepts as they apply to professional, collegiate, amateur, and corporate settings. In addition to a broad overview of the marketing mix, an emphasis will be placed on strategic market planning, consumer behavior, branding, sponsorship and activation, and marketing communication.

    This course will provide an overview of contemporary management practices and basic organizational theories. Students will apply these principles to sport settings and current events in a global environment.   • GSMT-630 Revenue Gen. in Sport (3)

    In this course students will learn about sales theory, strategies, and best practices. A variety of approaches for selling the sport product to consumers and businesses will be covered. In addition to selling, students will learn about the role of fundraising and development in college athletics, youth sport, and nonprofit organizations. The role of governing bodies and ethical and legal implications will also be addressed. Experiential learning will be emphasized and infused into the content delivery.

  • GSMT-640 Financial Mgmt in Sport (3)

    In this course students will learn about the financial management of public and private sport organizations. Instruction focuses on the financial issues that impact major and minor league professional sports, college athletic administration, and community sport and recreation organizations. Topics include but are not limited to ownership structures, venue financing, franchise valuation, taxation, pricing strategies, and demand analysis. Strategies used to enhance competitive balance and their financial impact will be examined.

  • GSMT-650 Risk Management (3)

    This course provides an understanding of liability in tort, contract, civil rights, and property law as it pertains to sport business enterprises. Students will examine how these legal principles apply to supervision, management, and business operations at all levels of the sport industry. More specifically, instruction will focus on managing risks associated with negligence and situations ripe for legal action, such as spectator injury, and equipment and facility maintenance.

    Extending from the content of Foundations of Sport Management, this course focuses on the practice of sport management in a global community. Course material will pertain to North American organizations that operate globally as well as organizations residing and operating outside of North America. Legal considerations, the movement of people and money, and the flow of information are among some of the aspects of globalization that will be discussed.

  • GSMT-670 Understanding & Using Data (3)

    This course prepares students to gather, describe, and analyze data to make decisions regarding operations, risk management, finance, marketing, etc. Industry-based applied learning will teach students how to use data to answer questions and solve problems in order to achieve objectives and improve performance. Students will also learn how to effectively communicate data-based recommendations for those not well-versed in data analysis.

  • GSMT-700 Capstone Exp in Sport Mgmt (3)

    The capstone course provides students the opportunity to gain practical experience with a local, regional, or national sport business or enterprise. In addition to working with an organization, students are required to complete a set of assignments that provide opportunities for reflection on the work, organization, and industry segment. A minimum of 400 hours is required for the internship. Registration in the course is dependent upon the approval of the internship agreement and plan by the graduate program director.

  • GSMT-701 CapstoneRsrch in Sport Mgmt (3)

    Students in this course will work with industry partners to design and execute a strategy for solving problems pertaining to the business operations of the organizations. Students will synthesize their advanced knowledge of sport management with that of research design, data usage, and statistics to help sport organizations resolve problems. They will also have opportunities to hone their written and oral communications skills through the writing of reports and executive summaries, and presenting to industry executives.

  • GSMT-710 Comprehensive Exam (0)

    The comprehensive exam is designed to measure each student?s knowledge and understanding of the sport industry. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to synthesize the knowledge they?ve gained by successfully answering a series of short essay questions. Students may register for this course after successfully completing 27 credit hours of the course of study, but may not sit for the exam until all other program requirements have been completed. Students may repeat the course if a passing exam grade is not achieved. Unsatisfactory/satisfactory grades will be assigned for the course.
