Learning Outcomes

Goal #1 Students will describe and analyze genres of professional writing by:

  • Using various rhetorical tools to identify genres of writing, looking at factors that include purpose, audience, medium, style, and other relevant characteristics.
  • Exploring the various social and professional contexts and constraints that shape professional communication environments.
  • Interpreting and explaining the ethical decisions of rhetorical choices.

Goal #2 Students will compose in discipline-specific modes of writing:

  • Demonstrating their understanding of professional writing genres by composing short documents and presentations in response to various cases.
  • Producing long-form written documents that respond to a particular need and are thoroughly revised and edited.
  • Mastering particular programs (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) and/or particular skills (copy editing).
