Program Requirements
B.A. in Spanish
All courses required for the major and all the electives that may be applied to the major are included in the determination of the grade point average in the major.
Requirements
Intermediate – 12 credits
- Four LSPN elective courses at the 200 level or above
Advanced – 15 credits
- Five LSPN elective courses at the 300 level or above
Note: Students who place above the 200-level in LSPN coursework should consult with the Chair or a Spanish faculty member to determine the appropriate path for progression in the Spanish major.
Global/Cultural Electives – 6 credits
Choose TWO courses focusing on cross-cultural and/or global perspectives from the following:
- Any LLIT course (3)
- SOCI 217 - Latino Health Care Issues (3)
- HNRS 2562 - Real Talk on Language, Culture, and Connection (3)
- HNRS 2532 - Immigration is US (3)
- One course in any language other than Spanish or English (3)
Semester Abroad Component
All Spanish majors are strongly encouraged to complete at least one semester abroad as a way to immerse themselves in the language and culture. Up to nine credits for advanced language and culture courses may be applied to the major from study abroad.
Total: 33 credits
Note: Course substitutions for the Spanish major may be made only after consultation with and approval from the Chair or a member of the Spanish faculty.
Inclusive Adolescence Education Dual Major/Concentration in Spanish
Students pursuing teaching certification in inclusive adolescence education (Spanish) may dual major in inclusive adolescence education and Spanish (major requirements as listed above) or they may opt to complete a language concentration. Either choice results in the Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to meeting all of the inclusive adolescence education requirements (see Inclusive Adolescence Education for details), the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures in consultation with the education department, has outlined the following courses for the foreign language concentrations which meet the New York state requirement for foreign language certification. Note that the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in Spanish is required for either the dual major or the concentration in the language, and the student must obtain a minimum of "Advanced Low" in order to meet graduation requirements.

Inclusive Childhood Education Dual Major/Concentration in Spanish
Students pursuing teaching certification in inclusive childhood education must declare either a second major or a concentration in a liberal arts field. Either choice results in a Bachelor of Science degree. Inclusive childhood education major who wish to pursue a dual major with Spanish take all of the major requirements as listed above in addition to meeting all of the inclusive childhood education requirements (see Inclusive Childhood Education for details). If an inclusive childhood education major wishes to complete a concentration in Spanish, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures in consultation with the Education Department, has outlined the following courses which meet the New York state requirement for a liberal arts concentration in this field. Students must earn grades of "C" or higher in all courses in the content area.
